Minister Mitrović participated at the ministerial panel „Shaping the future: safe, smart and sustainable roads“ and signed with his counterparts from Albania, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia the Declaration expressing their commitment to build safe, smart and sustainable roads. The signatories undertook to continue to invest in the development of the indicative of TEN-T transport network extension, to put more efforts into establishing an efficient road maintenance system by 2024, to establish intelligent transport systems as the tools for safe, better and interoperable road services in the region in line with the EU standards, and to work towards ensuring e-charge interoperability in the region by 2024.
Better connection between the Western Balkans countries within the region and with the EU is a priority to be achieved by enabling the development of the common regional market on the foundations of the EU acquis.
The process of connecting the economies should be moving towards upgrading the green corridors initiative – by ensuring full operational capacities on the key border crossings on daily basis, by setting up tools for monitoring (Galileo) border crossings wait times at all border crossings located on the green corridors network, as well as by signing and implementing bilateral agreements on road and rail border crossings“, Minister Mitrović said, adding that it is necessary to insist on green and digital transition of the region, circular economy and the implementation of the impending Green Agenda for the Western Balkans aimed at strengthening the key infrastructure connections, in particular main transport and energy connections which are vital for economic growth.
At the end of his address Minister Mitrović noted that good and fast transport connections within the region and with the neighbouring EU countries are vital, as well as is the sustainable rail and inland waterway transport whereby establishing mutual connections between the region capitals should be a priority.
