Introducing Sarajevo – Prague direct airline and rail traffic were in focus of separate meetings held by the state Minister of Communications and Transport, Edin Forto, with the Czech Republic Minister of Transport, Martin Kupka, and the Czech Railways CEO, Michael Krapinc, and the Chairman of the Prague Airport Board of Directors, Jiri Pos, respectively.

Minister Kupka supported Minister Forto’s initiative for extending the European Network of Corridors (TEN-T network) with an additional corridor that would connect four capitals in our region, from Zagreb, via Bihać, Sarajevo and Podgorica, to Tirana, which would facilitate financing of the construction of these roads and enable significant support from the EU funds.

On this occasion, Minister Forto indicated the necessity to introduce some reliefs for professional drivers who are not exempt from the EU directive according to which they can stay in the EU up to 90 days within a 180-day period, unlike ship and airplane crews who are exempted from this EU directive.

Road transport congestions and the strategic EU commitment, as well as the financial allocations that accompany these strategies, indicate that railways are the future of transport.

Czech Railways CEO, Mr. Krapinec, noted that the Czech Republic allocates significant funds for passenger rail transport, where only one third of costs are covered by the ticket sale, while two thirds of costs are co-financed by all levels of government.

According to Director Pos, one of the priorities of the Prague Airport is to open new lines, including the one to Sarajevo. At the same time, readiness was expressed to strengthen cooperation and transfer knowledge and experience gained by the Prague Airport in its operation that can be applied by the airports in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
