Growing Euroscepticism can only be silenced with large infrastructure projects, primarily rail, road, and energy ones, and more substantial financial allocations from the EU funds in order to improve the living standards of BiH citizens.

This was today’s message by Edin Forto, the state-level Minister of Communications and Transport, at the meeting held in Brussels with the EU Commissioner for Enlargement, Oliver Varhelyi.

Minister Forto stated that the particular capacity for the development lies in digital transformation, adding that BiH has finalised the negotiations for joining the Digital Europe Programme, whereas an agreement on strategic documents, including the Broadband Strategy and Electronic Communications Sectoral Policy 2023-2027, is soon to be finalised.

“There is a lot of work ahead of the BiH institutions at all-levels of government in fulfilling the conditions on its path to the EU membership, however, the citizens must feel the process in terms of quality improvement in BiH. Otherwise, mere alignment of legislation will not serve the purpose”, said Forto.

Minister Forto took the opportunity of the talks with Commissioner Varhelyi to discuss cancelling of roaming between the Western Balkan countries and the EU, the stay of professional drivers in the EU, and prolongation of stay restriction from 90 to 180 days.

Forto also emphasised the need for a stronger support of the European Union to the regional projects such as the construction of Sarajevo – Podgorica road and modernisation and construction or rail infrastructure.
